Fluency Beyond Fast

Description: This session takes a closer look at how fluency develops in the early grades by examining the progressions of counting, number relationships, and operations. Educators will explore fluency beyond speed—focusing on accuracy, flexibility, and efficiency—and learn how to support conceptual fluency through research-based strategies, structured routines, and student thinking.

Grade Band: K-2 (also beneficial for Grade 3 teachers)

Learning Goals:​

​

  • Understand how fluency develops in K–2, including counting, number relationships, and operations.

  • Identify how students move from counting to reasoning as number sense grows.

  • Define fluency as accuracy, flexibility, and efficiency—not just speed.

  • Explore fluency-building strategies, including games and activities.

  • Recognize what fluency looks like in the K–2 standards and avoid pushing memorization too soon.

  • Use research-based learning progressions to guide instruction and support students through key fluency steps.
