Fluency Beyond Fast

Description: This session examines how mathematical fluency develops across grades through key progressions in number and operations. Educators will explore fluency beyond speed—focusing on accuracy, flexibility, and efficiency—and examine how students transition from early strategies to more advanced operational reasoning. Participants will engage with research-based learning progressions, instructional routines, games, and models that build conceptual fluency aligned to grade-level standards, without pushing memorization too soon.

Grade Band:s K-2 (also beneficial for Grade 3 teachers) and
3-5 (also beneficial for Grade 6 teachers).
Learning Goals:

-
Understand how fluency develops across grades through progressions in number and operations.
-
Identify how students transition from early strategies to more advanced reasoning.
-
Define fluency as accuracy, flexibility, and efficiency—not just speed.
-
Explore fluency-building strategies, including games and activities.
-
Recognize grade-level indicators of fluency and avoid premature memorization.
-
Use research-based learning progressions to guide instruction and support students through key fluency steps.
