1.G.A.3: Partitioning Shapes Isn’t Just Geometry

This standard is labeled as geometry… but it’s really where fraction understanding begins.

In 1.G.A.3, students partition shapes into halves and fourths—but it’s not just about drawing lines or folding paper.

Because not all 4 pieces are fourths—and more pieces doesn’t mean more for you.

3.NBT.A.1: Is “5 or More, Go Next Door” Actually Aligned to the Standard?

This poem is hanging in classrooms across the country:

"If it's 5 or more, go next door..."

But is it aligned to the standard?

In Grade 3, rounding is about using place value understanding—reasoning about distance, number lines, and how numbers relate. It’s not a new skill. It builds on what students already know.

That’s coherence.

8.EE.C.8.b: Solve Simple Cases by Inspection

This week’s Math Standard Monday looks at 8.EE.C.8.b and the often-overlooked phrase "solve simple cases by inspection." “

Students are frequently taught to manipulate systems until they produce a contradiction or an identity, even when the structure of the equations already reveals the answer.

Recognizing structure if often more aligned with the intent of the standards than doing additional algebraic steps.

Our Videos

Math Standard Monday is where the standards come to life. Each video unpacks a single standard, digging into the mathematics behind it and what it actually means for instruction.

Rather than focusing on what to teach, these videos focus on how students make sense of the math—and how teachers can use that thinking to guide decisions, build connections, and strengthen understanding over time.
