High-Leverage Instructional Routines

Description:  This engaging session introduces educators to six high-leverage instructional routines (HLIRs) that bring clarity, structure, and student voice to math instruction. Participants will explore what makes something a routine, define the core characteristics of HLIRs, and experience each routine in action. Each routine is short (5–15 minutes), flexible, and content-driven, making them easy to embed within any curriculum. Educators will unpack how HLIRs promote student engagement, elevate mathematical reasoning, and offer informal assessment opportunities that inform responsive teaching

Grade Bands: K-6

💻 Also available as a self-paced module

👩‍🏫 Can be paired with classroom modeling of HLIR

Learning Goals:

  • Understand why routines matter for building structure, consistency, and student ownership in the math classroom.

  • Identify the key characteristics of high-leverage instructional routines (HLIRs) and how they support effective teaching and learning.

  • Experience six specific HLIRs that promote student reasoning, discourse, and engagement in just 5–15 minutes.

  • Analyze each routine to uncover how it elevates thinking, supports classroom discourse, and reveals student understanding.

  • Develop a plan to implement one or more routines, with a focus on purpose, positioning, and student thinking.
