Introduction to the NJSLA

Description: This session helps educators better understand the design and demands of the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA)—and how that understanding can enhance instruction rather than interrupt it. Participants will explore the structure and expectations of the test, analyze released items, and compare them to current classroom assessments. Through hands-on scoring practice, educators will build scoring confidence and uncover strategies for supporting students in thinking flexibly, showing their reasoning, and tackling unfamiliar problems. The session emphasizes that when instruction is truly aligned to the standards, test preparation isn’t a separate event—it’s embedded in the meaningful work students are already doing all year long.

Grade Bands: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 (can also focus on a single grade or domain)

Learning Goals:

  • Develop an understanding of the design, components, and expectations of the NJSLA/NJGPA.

  • Compare current assessments to the NJSLA/NJGPA.

  • Create an actionable plan for incorporating NJSLA/NJGPA released items or similar items into instruction and assessment to improve student understanding and performance.
